The Culinary Institute of America – Hyde Park

Culinary Insitute-11-2013FullSizeRenderFor all of you current and future foodies, The Culinary Institute of America is located on the east bank of the Hudson River in scenic Hyde Park, NY. The campus is 170 acres and conveniently located just an hour and a half from both New York City and Albany.  It is a must see with breathtaking views of the Hudson River.

I would suggest you call in advance to schedule a tour as this is a fully functioning campus. You can enjoy fabulous meals at anyone of their four award winning restaurants located on campus, however, you are required to make an advance reservation at the American Bounty Restaurant, Ristorante Caterina de’ Medici and The Bocuse Restaurant. The Apple Pie Bakery Café is open daily and does not require reservations. It is a nice venue to enjoy a cup of coffee, cappuccino, delicious pastry or a light breakfast prepared and served by the students of the institute. It is a spectacular venue which is enjoyed by students, restaurant patrons, and tourists alike.

As the well known Chef Julia Childs stated, The Culinary Institute of America is the Harvard of cooking schools. So when you are in the New York City area just know that the Institute is straight up the Hudson River and just under a two hour drive from the city.  If you opt to take the Metro-North train from New York City once you arrive in Poughkeepsie you are a five minute taxi drive to the institute.

CIA SignCIO PhotoAs a meeting planner I was anxious to know if the institute had space where you could hold an off-site or special event. Unfortunately space is limited! They can accommodate a small dinner group but most of the facility is used for teaching purposes. I enjoyed looking in on the classes and observing students and instructors alike. Could not help but visualize where these students will be in ten years.

Bon Appetite!

Autumn in New York – Return Visit

030046040020051

Each October I have the opportunity to attend an Annual Event in New York State which for me is the best time to visit the upstate counties of Putnam and Dutchess.  My arrival was during a peak week when the autumn colors were beautiful and this year was no exception.  I  assume that with all the snow, rain and crazy weather the Northeast experienced this winter it produced this fantastic fall foliage.

Pumpkins

This time of the year is pumpkin and apple season.  You will find some of the best cider that can be enjoyed hot or cold.

During my visit I spent time in the small town of Sherman, CT which is home to The American Pie Company, Inc.  We experienced their delicious lemon meringue, apple and cherry crumb pies.  Yummy!

I was also able to do some apple picking from this orchard below and the fruit was luscious and delicious.

Anquilla – Tranquility Wrapped in Blue

Anquilla BeachRecently I had the privilege of making my first visit to the beautiful island of Anguilla, in the British West Indies. It was a delightful experience. Ask me what I remember most about this island, the beaches. They are absolutely breathe taking with several shades of turquoise green water and white powdery sand that feels soft and embracing on your body. The island is three miles at its widest point and sixteen miles long. There are approximately 33 beaches in Anguilla, but none more popular than Shoal Bay East which is rated one of the top best beaches in the world! Their island slogan ‘Tranquility Wrapped in Blue’ very appropriate.

There are no fast food establishments, restaurant chains, or large shopping malls, and theatres on the island.  Instead, there were quaint local eateries serving a variety of Anguillan specialty foods, and meal choices that would appeal to many palettes. It is not difficult to locate fine dining restaurants on the island that could rival any on famed restaurant rows.

Anguilla markets to a high end clientele. Because of the many villas and quaint resorts it is a huge draw for visitors and celebrities who want to get lost in the crowd. It is said that Anguilla is where guest go to hide instead of being seen. There are many lavish, beautifully furnished and well appointed villas. Most have their own pools, Jacuzzi, theatre, recreation/game rooms, saunas, exercise rooms and many other amenities. Many have four to eight bedrooms and are very appealing for small corporate retreats, corporate meetings, and incentive programs.

099Anquilla Boat-Beach-3I found that many of the hotels did not exceed 100 sleeping rooms and were limited when it came to meeting room space. I stayed at the Malliouhana Hotel & Spa (55 rooms) which is on 26 acres overlooking Meads Bay and Turtle Cove on the northwest coast of the island.  Like some of the hotels my room did not have a television, radio, clock, ironing board or coffee maker. However, included in your overnight stay are many water sports, snorkeling, windsurfing, catamarans along with complimentary snorkels and fins. While there I visited several other resorts with spas, Cap Juluca, Cuisinart, Altamer (villa), Viceroy Resort & Residences, and two smaller hotels, Carimar Beach Club and Paradise Cove.

The island of Anguilla grows little produce, except for the 9.5 lb. sweet potato that found itself in the weekly newspaper. Fishing is plentiful, which was evident by the 840 lb. marlin that was caught off the coast of Anguilla. And they have little rain fall per year. Along with their claim to fame ,their beaches which are absolutely beautiful their other natural resource are the Anguillan people who are warm, friendly and inviting.  They love their island home and usually return after they finish their education to give back to their communities. When you are planning your next retreat, board meeting or need a private get away think easy breezy Anguilla. The island will be waiting for you!

Southern Hospitality

Woolworth Bldg, GreensborophotoDo you recognize this location?  It has a very popular downtown walking area.  If you stay at the right property you are in walking distance to the International Civil Rights Museum, numerous restaurants and lots of shopping venues. It has an aquatic center that is almost 80,000 square feet.  It is home to Bennett College and it has many beautiful gardens, arboretums, a cultural center at Festival Park and lots of fun activities. Remember that I am only listing a few of the gems that you or a group can enjoy especially in the summer months.

I was there the beginning of August for a social function (family reunion) and had an enjoyable time.  Have you guessed the location?  You are right!  It is Greensboro, NC.  I have visited the State of North Carolina for other types of meetings and events and including this destination to my list was a plus. It is certainly a great location for a meeting.  My group loved the fact that once they arrived at the Downtown Marriott they could park their cars and for the next few days relax, enjoy fellowship, share family stories, enjoy good food and experience southern hospitality.

Speaking of good food, the welcome reception opened with a spread of home prepared hors d’oeuvres and southern dishes. It was not difficult for the guests to realize they had returned to the south, and were some place close to their upbringing.  Everyone had a wonderful evening sharing stories about their travels, family updates and how they planned to enjoy the remainder of their visit together.

Civil Rights Museum LobbyPaul Robeson ICR MusuemAfter breakfast on Saturday morning we headed off to visit the International Civil Rights Museum three short blocks from the hotel.  For the baby boomers and seniors the video reenactments and displays took them back down memory lane as they relived some of the civil right struggles and accomplishments. It was nice to see the young people ask questions and express such an interest as they toured the museum. Many of them were not even born during the movement so seeing them express such an appreciation for this educational venue was heartwarming.  The museum limits picture taking but I was able to take a few photos in the lobby area before our 1.5 hour tour of the facility. If you are in the area this museum is a must see tour. You will appreciate the brave efforts and displays of courage by mostly young people at the time who paved the way for all people to live and experience the American Dream. This museum should be put on your bucket list. I think you will agree there is a lot to do and see in Greensboro. NC.  I also want to thank the Greensboro CVB for their support and assistance with this family reunion.

Cancun, Mexico – Place to Remember!

238In April I had the opportunity to travel to Cancun, Mexico.  It is located on the northeast coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in the Mexican State of Quintana Roo. I had a few new clients who were looking to bring groups to Cancun.  As their meeting planner part of my job was to make sure that the destination would adequately meet all of their requirements. I must say I was pleasantly surprised.  New hotel brands in the area, like the Grand Residences by Royal Resorts, and recent renovations made my visit a real pleasure. The properties along what I refer to as hotel row have a good sense of security which is always important personally and for my groups.

099246Cancun is a gorgeous destination with stunning beaches, aqua blue water and lots of sunshine. I am partial to properties located on the Caribbean Sea.  Many groups especially those incentive ones would definitely fall in love with the destination.

I left my office in California traveling on Aero Mexico Airlines. We connected through Mexico City and enjoyed on time, pleasant travels. Upon my arrival my pre-arranged ground transportation was awaiting. My driver knew which hotel I was staying which came in handy when I had to track down where I left my camera which managed to fall out of my tote bag. I notified the Concierge Desk and they immediately called the taxi service. I was so happy to have my camera returned.  You all know how distressing it is when something like this happens.  And, you always remember the photos that got away. This helped sell me on Cancun as a destination!

St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador

NF-Colorful RowhousesNF Houses-MoreNF HomesRecently I had the distinct pleasure of visiting a place I had never been to before. The purpose of my trip was to locate a destination for an incentive group. Some place that would have an overwhelming appeal. The mission was to identify a place with a feel of the great outdoors, lots of water sporting activities, museums, several team building options, good food and lots of fun. Personally I wanted it to be stimulating, rugged, charming, and possess a compelling story.

The destination is Newfoundland and Labrador, it had all of the above, and more. The narrow colorful row homes seen above with the small doors and windows were seen all throughout St. John’s and the surrounding towns.

Lighthouse-NFSignal Hill-NFMy explorations started in the small town of St. John’s. I found the residents to be friendly, energetic, and spirited. They showed a deep concern and interest in visitors. I had the feeling I had been there before but I think it was because St. John’s is the kind of place that reminds you of so many other places. So far up in the North Atlantic Ocean, I even had the feeling I was in the Caribbean. Mind you my visit was during the summer! With the bright sunny days and clear blue skies it was not difficult visualizing the Caribbean.

Newfoundland and Labrador is a destination appreciated with pictures. What a beautiful coastline, small islands, icebergs and as much ocean as the eyes can see.  You will probably feel like I did, it is many destinations in one destination. I found what I was looking for!

As for the compelling stories there are many. Some told in legends and others put to music. They even have their own dog named after the country, the Newfoundland.  He is a large strong working dog used to pull nets for fisherman and haul wood from the forest.  He is well suited to work on land or water, known to be a good swimmer and equally strong “pack horse.” Sweet-natured and responsive, he makes a wonderful family companion as well.  The Labrador Retriever also hails from this area of Canada.

Oh almost forgot, tradition has it that before you depart St. John’s you must kiss the cod.  That’s a long story, but I kept with tradition!

The Beauty of Colors – Autumn Leaves

Autumn Colors-0-2013Have you had this experience?  You attend a three day conference in a beautiful destination and most of your time is spent inside a convention center or hotel ballroom.  Or, you are at a lovely resort near the ocean, desert, or stunningly sculptured golf course and you rarely have an opportunity to appreciate your surroundings.

You might reason the main purpose for making the trip was to attend the conference. But wouldn’t it be nice if you could make a little time to enjoy the destination. It is exactly what I thought about recently at an event back east this Fall. I made a conscientious effort to observe some of the outdoor beauty. In this case I am making reference to the trees, one more beautiful than the other.  There was an endless array of colors. I feltP1080063 compelled a number of times to stop the car, pull off the road, and take pictures, which I was able to do while on a few site inspections. It caused the day to be a little longer but it was time well spent.  I wanted something to share with others and also keep the memories more vivid and alive.   Fall on the east coast is a very special season, filled with colors.

Autumn Colors-2-2013So the next time you are at a conference or event do like I did, take a little time to observe the beauty around you. As the expression goes, smell the roses and more importantly behold the beauty of colors starting from the moment you land at the airport, check into your hotel, visit restaurants or participate in fun activities.

It is difficult to be away from family and friends when having to attend conferences so make the best of the time away from home. Bring something back for them to enjoy.  Such images as these will make an indelible impression on them as your trip will make on you.  Enjoy the beauty of colors all around you.

Walkway over the Hudson

Walkway Over the Hudson – Poughkeepsie, NY

Walkway SignWalking over a bridge has a special and unique feeling for me.  Even though I have probably walked over a few small ones in my lifetime, the most significant was the Walkway over the Hudson, connecting the cities of Poughkeepsie and Highland, NY, and the second was the walk over the Brooklyn Bridge connecting Brooklyn with Manhattan.

Both experiences were truly breathtaking. The views from that platform certainly change the entire perspective of what you see. The Hudson River stretches so far and for some reason it made me think of all the historyWalkway-historic making men and women connected to that river and that area of NY. This walkway is enjoyed by the community and visitors alike. As I walked across my eyes feasted on the beautiful fall foliage as I experienced a pleasant workout after my over a mile walk.

Walk Over Hudson foliageThe walkway is a part of a restoration project which was completed in October 2009. It is now known as the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park. I wondered if this bridge could be used for events and to my delight I was happy to know that it is a major focal point for all kinds of events. From intimate wedding ceremonies to fundraisers involving thousands of people, Walkway Over the Hudson provides a unique venue for celebrations, marches, recreational gatherings, and other high visibility public events.

If your travels take you to Upstate New York, and you find yourself in or near Poughkeepsie make an effort to take the walk.  It is time well spent and you won’t regret it!

Noteworthy facts about the walkway:

Crosses: Hudson River

Length: 6,768 Feet (1.28 miles)

Width: 35 Feet

Bridge Construction: 1886-1889

Railroad: 1889-1974

Reopened as walkway: October 3, 2009

Mixing Business with Pleasure – Upstate NY

Autumn Leaves-1In September of this year I took a trip back east. It was great because I was able to mix business with pleasure. The weather could not have been better, beautiful blue skies, soft breezes and crisp air with moderate temperatures. I found it difficult during working hours to concentrate knowing that there was so much to be enjoyed outside. The autumn leaves were just beautiful; I would say they were at their peak. There were rolling hills covered with colorful autumn flowers, fields of pumpkins and dried corn stalks. After the event I felt compelled to check out the destination further to investigate what other fascinating venues and activities existed. My plan is to incorporate some of these activities in future programs.

So off I went to check out the area. I stayed in Patterson and Pawling, NY and visited many small towns in Duchess and Putnam counties. What a treat it was to experience the quiet sleepy towns with their quaintapple orchard homes, farms, horse trails, bed and breakfast venues and cute restaurants, and oh so many apple orchards.

Vassar College AutumnI enjoyed a delightful breakfast at a crepe café in Pawling with family and friends. Patterson and Pawling are just about a 40 minute drive to the town of Poughkeepsie. I never realized there were so many interesting places and things to see and do in that area.  For starters there is beautiful Vassar College for all you liberal arts lovers. What a campus! You can attend musicalcrepes breakfast recitals and it is fun to just walk the college campus which I might add is a real treat in the autumn.

Those few days were just perfect. But like I mentioned that was just for starters, there is a lot more to share. Check out our blog next week to continue the journey in Upstate New York!
